The Luxury Weddings

One wedding that remains in the memory is that of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai, and his wife Princess Salama in 1981. The costs for this magnificent wedding are said to have amounted to over 100 million US dollars (the equivalent of about 92.5 million euros). A stadium was built especially for the celebration and the 20,000 wedding guests. The festivities lasted seven days and offered the guests a spectacle of elaborate productions, concerts and an impressive fireworks display.

No less impressive was the wedding of Indian tycoon Lakshmi Mittal's daughter Vanisha to Amit Bhatia. The ceremony took place at Vaux-le-Vicomte Castle in France and is said to have cost around 65 million US dollars (approx. 60 million euros). The guest list was peppered with celebrities from all over the world. Around 1,000 guests were invited to the 6-day party. In the United States, Chelsea Clinton, daughter of former US President Bill Clinton, married her fiancé Marc Mezvinsky with a pompous wedding. According to estimates, the bill for this amounted to about 5 million US dollars (about 4.6 million euros). The ceremony took place in a specially erected tent in the small town of Rhinebeck, near New York. With elaborate floral decorations, high-profile guests and an impressive wedding cake, the wedding took place in strict seclusion from the public.

When Prince William and Kate Middleton tied the knot, the whole world watched. The magnificent ceremony in Westminster Abbey and the subsequent carriage ride through the streets of London were a great spectacle in the media. The royal wedding cost a total of around 58 million US dollars (approx. 53.6 million euros). A large part of the costs was swallowed up by the security staff alone. The flower arrangements were estimated at 1.1 million US dollars. 600 guests, including numerous celebrities, were invited.

Mukesh Ambani is the richest person in India and among the richest in the world. The proud father is said to have spent around 100 million US dollars on the wedding of his daughter Isha and her future husband Anand Piramal. Among other things, this money paid for 1,000 luxury limousines, security personnel and an appearance by Beyoncé in Indian dresses. The party lasted a week with 600 guests. The "pre-wedding party" took place at the palace in Udaipur. The actual wedding was then celebrated at the bride's father's home. He lives on 27 floors of a skyscraper in Mumbai. Nice gesture: On the occasion, Mukesh Ambani donated three meals a day to 5,100 needy people for four days.
