The high-rise building is the city's most dominant symbol and an artificial marvel that defies gravity by reaching up to the clouds. However, many people living in big cities are surrounded by tall buildings and are seldom able to get into nature. Being in an urban environment all the time shortens our visual horizons – we stare into a screen throughout the day, and when we look up, our view of the sky is framed by an office window or traffic light. In contrast, at the beach, the endless sea skyline is so extensive that it opens our minds, creating a sense of novelty and excitement that stimulates our brains. It is argued that simple gazing at the horizon is good for our emotional state and well-being.
